Lace Front vs. Full Lace Wigs: What's the Difference? 

According to British Vogue, 2018 is the year of the wig. Celebrities like Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Kylie Jenner all favor wigs.

It's unsurprising. They let you choose the color, style, texture, and length of your hair. No more hiding poor haircuts under hats or waiting to grow out an unfortunate style.

It's not just celebrities who get the importance of wigs. In the U.S., the wig and hairpiece industry grew by 5.4 percent every year between 2012 and 2017.

But with different types of wig available, where do you start? Most wigs are labeled either lace front or full lace. Do you know the difference?

What is a Lace Front Wig?

These wigs have a lace panel attached to the front hairline. Hair is hand-knotted into this lace. The rest of the wig is made from a different material.

Some lace front wigs only have lace panels for two inches or so. Others have lace fronts up to the crown.

These wigs give the appearance of a natural hairline. That said, there are still drawbacks. Using tape or glue can create a 'pulling' effect at the hairline which draws attention to the wig.

Lace front wigs are less flexible because you can't part them like you can your natural hair. You can only part them at the front.

But if you want a wig with more volume, lace front wigs are the better choice. They have more wefts at the back, giving more hair.

What is a Full Lace Wig?

A lace cap covers the entire head. The hair is hand-knotted into it the same as the lace front. But the process is repeated all over the wig.

This means they take much longer to make.

There's usually a stretchy strip of lace over the crown to accommodate different head sizes.

Because of their construction, full lace wigs are more versatile. You can create updo hairstyles, including high ponytails.

They don't shed hair and they're easy to wear.

The Wig Question: Lace Front vs. Full Lace

The biggest difference between lace front and full lace wig types is full lace wigs last longer. That also makes them more expensive.

The full lace wig is better for people who've worn wigs before. But they are lighter and more versatile.

The lace front wigs are easy to wear, which is great if you're new to wig wearing. They give more volume but they're less versatile for styling.

Both types of wigs come in glueless varieties. But it's a good idea to wear a wig cap with either style to keep your own hair out of the way. They also protect your own hair.
