Glueless Lace Wigs: How to Apply a Lace Wig without Wig Glue
Glueless Lace Wigs: How to Apply a Lace Wig without Wig Glue

Using strong adhesives like wig glue to secure your lace front wigs can cause a lot of problems. Some of them cannot be reversed.

Wig glue can block the pores in your scalp which can lead to damaging your hair follicles. This can prevent hair from growing along your hairline and even thinning out the hair that's already there.

And since latex is a common ingredient in wig glue, it can even cause allergic reactions in some wig wearers. These reactions can lead to rashes, dried-out hair, and even hair loss.

Maybe you've had a problem with wig glue in the past or you're simply looking for a safer alternative, there are quite a few ways to secure your glueless lace wig without any damage. Keep reading and we'll tell you all about them.

Preparing Your Hair for Your Wigs

To start, you will need to get your hair as flat and smooth as possible. The options vary based on your hair length, type, and texture.

If your hair is on the finer side or short, you can simply slick it back into a ponytail or braid at the nape of your neck. Then you will need to secure the length of the ponytail or braid against your head with a couple of bobby pins.

If your hair is thick or long, it might be best to put it in cornrows. You won't have to do any special kind of design, just straight back. Then you can pin your hair up.

Next, you can put on a wig cap. However, it isn't mandatory. If the lace doesn't match your skin, you can wear a wig cap that matches your skin complexion better.

This will help you create a more natural-looking part.

How to Apply Glueless Lace Wigs

Once your hair is nice and flat, it's time to apply your wig. The application process will differ based on which application method you choose.

Clips and Combs

Glueless wigs often come with either clips or combs sewn onto them. There is usually one located at the top of the head, another above each ear, and one in the back toward the nape of your neck.

These locations are pretty standard, but your wig manufacturer might do something different. If you don't feel very secure with the way they are arranged, you can easily remove them by cutting the thread that's attached. Or you can sew more on.

Wig clips and combs are very inexpensive. For instance, you can purchase a pack of 100 for $10 or so at your local beauty supply store.

Both wig clips and wig combs attach to your natural hair almost like a barrette will. They are best used when the wig already has a nice, snug fit.

Wig Tape

Wig tape is a bonding adhesive for securing wigs. However, wig tape isn't usually as strong or damaging as wig glue.

It often comes in strips that are already portioned out. But if you have strips you can cut them down to the size you like.

Wig tape can also come in the form of a roll like any other tape you'd use. You can cut this tape down to a size you're happy with too.

Now that you know where and how you want your wig to sit, you need to prepare your skin for it. First, wipe along your hairline with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol.

Then smooth all the hair along your hairline back. This will prevent you from tugging at your edges will removing the wig and tape later on.

Put a thin layer of liquid band air or scalp protector on the skin right below your hairline. Now, you can peel the protective paper off the wig tape and apply alone your hairline where you want the wig to go.

Next, you will put the wig in place and press down on each area where the tape is for a few seconds.

Before applying the tape, you will need to line the wig upon your head so that it fits properly and is in the spot you like. Once you are comfortable with the way the wig looks, you can start working on taping it down.

The Blending Method

The blending method isn't just good for glueless lace wigs, it's also the same method you'll use for a half wig. If you're going to do this though, you should use a wig that's close to your hair color and texture.

Otherwise, the blending part won't work well. You will need to pull a little bit of your hair out of the style it was slicked back into. How much you choose depends on the look you're trying to accomplish.

If you are using the blending method, you shouldn't use tape as it can get right into your hair. Blending works best when it's combined with the combs or clips.

Attaching an Elastic Band

For the elastic band method, you can purchase an elastic band from your local craft store. The band is then sewn horizontally across the back of the wig in the nape area.

This method helps your wig lay flat. If you purchase a wig that's a little too big, this is the method for you.

The elastic band will work like a drawstring on a pair of baggy sweatpants.
